Drayton McLane Jr. is a Texas businessman, civic leader and philanthropist whose influence spans higher education, industry and professional sports. A Baylor University graduate, McLane has maintained a deep and enduring connection to his alma mater for more than seven decades, supporting the university through leadership, service and transformational philanthropy.
A native Texan raised in Cameron, McLane developed an early appreciation for hard work while assisting in his family’s wholesale grocery business, the McLane Company. He earned a Bachelor of Business Administration degree from Baylor in 1958 and a Master of Business Administration degree from Michigan State University the following year. After completing his education, he returned to the family business, beginning on the loading dock and steadily advancing through management by earning the respect of colleagues at every level.
McLane became president and chief executive officer of the McLane Company in the mid-1960s and led the organization for three decades. Under his leadership, the company grew into a multibillion-dollar enterprise with sustained annual growth. Following the company’s merger with Walmart Inc. in 1990, McLane served as vice chairman of Walmart while continuing to lead the McLane Company. He later focused his efforts on the McLane Group, the family’s parent company with global operations.
In 1992, McLane purchased the Houston Astros and served as chairman and CEO for 19 seasons. During his tenure, the franchise reached the World Series for the first time in its history and emphasized community engagement across the Houston region. He sold the team in 2011.
McLane’s philanthropic legacy is especially visible at Baylor University, where he served as a regent and supported scholarships and campus landmarks, including the bells in Pat Neff Hall, the McLane Student Life Center and McLane Stadium. His commitment to higher education extends beyond Baylor through service on the boards of Baylor College of Medicine, the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor and Texas A&M University’s Bush School of Government and Public Service. In recognition of his contributions, he received the Mirabeau B. Lamar Medal in 2013. McLane continues to be recognized for leadership grounded in integrity, faith and long-term vision, leaving a lasting impact on education, business and communities across Texas. He received the Lamar Hunt Lifetime Achievement Award in 2014 in recognition of his decades of dedication to collegiate athletics in Texas.
