Fry, Hayden

Odessa
1943-46

“Crazy Legs” Fry, as he was known to his Odessa High teammates and fans, ran the T-formation offense as quarterback and led the Broncos to the 1946 state championship. He also earned MVP honors at the THSCA All-Star Game the next summer before a four-year career at Baylor, where he backed up all-Americans Adrian Burk and Larry Isbell. Fry ranks 18th on the all-time wins list for FBS coaches with an overall record of 232-178-10 in 37 seasons at SMU (1962-72), North Texas (1973-78) and Iowa (1979-98). Fry's "coaching tree" of former assistants includes successful major-college coaches Bill Snyder, Barry Alvarez, Jerry Moore, Kirk Ferentz, Mike Stoops, Bret Bielema, Jim Leavitt and Bo Pelini, as well as Houston Oilers and New Orleans Saints head coach Bum Phillips.
