Waco, Texas(Feb. 12, 2020) — International soccer star Clint Dempsey will be inducted into the Texas Sports Hall of Fame in Waco on March 28.
Clint Dempsey is from Nacogdoches, Texas. He was the first player in U.S. history to score goals in 3 FIFA World Cups (2006, 2010, 2014). His goal against Ghana in 2014 happened just 29 seconds after the match started and was the 5th fastest in tournament history.
Dempsey played in college at Furman University and was drafted by the MLS club the New England Revolution in 2004. He played in the English Premier League (EPL) for Fulham from 2007-2012, scoring 60 goals in 232 total appearances for the Cottagers. His 60 goals are the most ever by a Fulham player and the most ever by an American EPL player.
In January 2012, Dempsey became the first U.S. player to record a hat trick in the EPL during a 5-2 win against Newcastle United. After a brief stint with Tottenham Hotspur, he joined the Seattle Sounders FC and led his team to the 2014 MLS Supporters Shield, the U.S. Open Cup and the MLS Cup crown in 2016.
The 6’1” forward was a member of the US Men’s National Team (MNT) from 2004-2017 and made 141 appearances. He led the MNT to its first-ever FIFA Final at the 2009 Confederations Cup. He played a key role in all four of his Concacaf Gold Cup Appearances, leading the USA to titles in 2005, 2007 and 2017.
On July 22, 2017, he tied Landon Donovan with his 57th all-time goal for the most in MNT history. He was a three-time U.S. Male Soccer Athlete of the Year (2007, 2011 & 2012) and retired from the Seattle Sounders FC in 2018.
Dempsey will be one of the seven inductees honored at the Texas Sports Hall of fame on March 28. He will be joined by Baltimore Ravens Quarterback Robert Griffin III, former Houston Texan punter Shane Lechler, Olympic medalist Michelle Carter, former New York Liberty point guard Teresa Weatherspoon, Former Texas Ranger baseman Adrian Beltre and five-time US Olympian runner Francie Larrieu Smith.
The class of 2020 Inductees will be honored on Saturday, March 28 at 6 p.m. at the Waco Convention Center. Before the banquet, the Texas Sports Hall of Fame will host a reception at 4 p.m. Combination Reception and Banquet tickets can be purchased for $200 each or $1,400 for a reserved table of eight.
