Steve Macko Scholarship Fund Celebrity Golf Tournament Oct. 6, 2008

Steve Macko was a baseball player. He was born in Burlington, Iowa in 1954 and grew up to the smell of pine tar and  linseed oil.  His father, Joe Macko, played and managed from 1948-1964 and was Clubhouse Manager for the Texas Rangers Professional Baseball Club until 2000.

Slight of frame, only 5’10’’ tall and 160 pounds, the shortstop from Baylor University was voted Southwest Conference Player of the Year and named to the 1977 All-Southwest Conference, All-SWC Tournament, All South Central Regional Tournament, NCAA District Six, and NCAA All-American first teams.
He was picked up by the Chicago Cubs in the fifth round and was called up to the big leagues in August, 1979.  The following season, Steve reported to Wichita (class AAA), but rejoined the Cubs on July 22, 1980 and was batting .300 with a five game hitting streak when he was injured in a violent collision with the Pirates’ Bill Madlock. Placed on the disabled list on August 6th, Steve was diagnosed a short time later with testicular Cancer and died the next year on November 15, 1981 at age 27.

The Steve Macko Scholarship Fund has been investing in the lives of young people since his death by establishing endowment scholarships at Baylor University, The University of Texas at Arlington, Texas Wesleyan University, Bishop Dunne High School, and the Fellowship of Christian Athletes Summer Camp Program.  The Fund is currently involved in endowing a scholarship to support the health and fitness learning center at the Texas Sports Hall of Fame.
