The Texas Sports Hall of Fame will be releasing a new online exhibit on Friday January 19th , one day before the 50th anniversary of the 1968 Game of the Century between the University of Houston and UCLA basketball teams.
The game was historically significant for a number of reasons. The matchup between the 1st and 2nd ranked teams was played in the Astrodome before the largest crowd to ever watch a basketball game and was the first nationally televised regular season NCAA game. It also pitted the nation’s best Coach and player combinations against each other as Houston’s Guy V. Lewis and Elvin Hayes defeated John Wooden and Lew Alcindor.
The online exhibit features images of the game, players, coaches and even some associated objects from the museum’s extensive collection.
“The Texas Sports Hall of Fame will continue to put together these type of exhibits in the future. This format allows us to better utilize historic images and two dimensional objects. I think people will enjoy the exhibit. It’s a fascinating story and one of the few “big” games that lived up to the hype.” said TSHOF Vice President of Operations Jay Black.
